Here at YPUL we're often asked this question and, to be quite honest, it's a difficult one. You see, the answer is not exactly black and white. The short answer is YES they do work but it depends on several factors. Namely: what is said, how it's said, and what the body language says.

So what should I say?

Choose a pick up line that isn't rude, crude, or overly sexually. Most importantly, make sure it's appropriate for the situation you're in. If she's a party girl, say something fun and upbeat. If he's in a suit, say something witty and sophisticated. If you're at the library, say something quietly. Always remember, certain lines are meant to be said only as a joke, and then, only to someone you already have rapport with.

How should I say it?

You have to remember that people will naturally feel a little uncomfortable when a stranger approaches them. Make sure you talk in a loud, clear, and non-threatening voice so that they can hear you and you're not mumbling. This will help to minimize awkwardness and ease the tension. Speak with confidence, it's attractive.

What about my body language?

When you approach the person, or group, don't fully face and walk towards them. Instead, approach at an angle, imagine yourself approaching an animal that you don't want to frighten away. Face your body slightly away from them, turn your head, and talk to them over your shoulder. Again, be confident. Look confident. Don't shuffle on your feet or twiddle with anything in you're hands. Look them in the eyes and maintain eye contact. Make sure you smile.

Keep in mind that a pick up line is only meant to get the conversation started. Transition into another topic before the conversation goes stale and you find yourself in an awkward silence.
